A Romantic New Zealand Elopement at St Matthew-in-the-City

For Kaelan and Tongtong, their wedding was more than a single day. It was the beginning of a journey through New Zealand—starting with an intimate elopement ceremony at St Matthew-in-the-City in Auckland before continuing to the South Island for travel and more gorgeous photographs.

Beneath the church’s soaring neo-Gothic arches, Kaelan and Tongtong exchanged vows surrounded by elegant white flowers. Cascading orchids adorned the timber pews, delicate petals marked the aisle and refined personal flowers complemented their timeless wedding attire.

The grandeur of the setting, the simplicity of the floral palette and the couple’s infectious happiness came together in a beautiful celebration of love and adventure.

A destination elopement in Auckland

Travelling from China to marry in New Zealand gave Kaelan and Tongtong’s elopement a wonderful sense of discovery.

The couple chose St Matthew-in-the-City for their ceremony. Built in 1905, this striking stone church is known for its magnificent neo-Gothic architecture, long central aisle, stained-glass windows and polished timber pews.

Although the church has an impressive scale, the ceremony retained the intimacy of an elopement. With the focus entirely on Kaelan, Tongtong and the vows they shared, every moment felt close, calm and meaningful.

The floral design was created to soften the church while allowing its remarkable architecture to remain central.

Cascading white orchids and roses were arranged at considered intervals along the ends of the pews. Their graceful stems brought natural movement to the aisle and echoed the flowing lines of Tongtong’s veil and lace train.

White petals were scattered lightly along the processional, adding another layer of softness without making the setting feel overly decorated.

Viewed from above, the flowers created an elegant pathway through the church. The contrast between the white orchids, dark timber and pale stone felt luminous, refined and perfectly suited to the couple’s timeless aesthetic.

Elegant flowers for an intimate ceremony

Tongtong carried a classic white bouquet featuring roses, tulips, lisianthus and stocks. Compact and refined, the bouquet complemented the intricate lacework of her gown while remaining comfortable to carry throughout the ceremony and portrait session. A coordinating white rose buttonhole gave Kaelan’s black suit a polished finishing detail.

Personal flowers take on particular importance at an elopement. With fewer decorative elements, the bouquet and buttonhole become part of almost every photograph. They need to look beautiful from every angle while feeling completely connected to the couple and their surroundings.

A joyful beginning

After the ceremony, Kaelan and Tongtong walked back through the flower-lined aisle hand in hand. The quiet emotion of their vows quickly turned into laughter and celebration.

Outside the church, they marked the moment with playful portraits and a spray of champagne against the dramatic stone façade.

From Tongtong riding on Kaelan’s back to the couple laughing together in the Auckland sunshine, the photographs feel less like formal wedding portraits and more like memories from an unforgettable adventure.

The contrast was perfect: historic architecture and delicate lace, polished black tailoring and romantic white flowers, quiet moments during the ceremony followed by exuberant celebration outside.

Planning a New Zealand elopement

A destination elopement may be intimate, but its details still deserve thoughtful planning.

The ceremony venue, flowers, wedding attire and photography should work together—particularly when the celebration includes travel between several locations. Flowers need to be designed for the scale of the ceremony while also being considered in relation to the photographs that will preserve the experience.

At St Matthew-in-the-City, white roses and orchids work especially beautifully. They bring softness to the neo-Gothic interior, photograph elegantly against the stone and timber, and create a timeless aesthetic that will feel beautiful for years to come.
